root sudo superuser privileges on thuban2 (and on clients)

The only way I know how to get into thuban2 is to be on canopus or mirzam, and from there,

ssh thuban2

To do important stuff, one needs to have root (aka superuser) privileges.

I tried sudo blah blah blah with limited results.

Bruce says I need instead to do:

sudo su –  (that’s a blank followed by a minus sign) . On canny running as jweisber, it asks for my password and then drops me into canny root; 

{canopus.physics.careleton.edu}:{jweisber}:~> sudo su –
[sudo] password for jweisber:
Last login: Tue Aug 25 11:48:59 CDT 2026 on :0
[root@canopus ~]#

After sshing to thuban2 from canny as jweisber, the same command
(sudo su – )drops me into thuban2 root.

From Dan, here are some further superuser etc commands Aug 2026:

On  clients, (but seemingly not on thuban2):

su – root (followed by root password) (i got it to work on canny, not thuban2)

sudo -i (followed by my password) I think runs my .cshrc
